Windsor Continuous Armchair

Connecticut or Rhode Island, ca. 1770.
Mixed woods; maple, hickory, and ash.
Over-all in fine condition, supporting dovetail wedge under seat, 19th c. black paint over grey over original green.
Provenance: Peter Eaton Antiques; from the Schutte Collection; Fred Giampietro, New England Auctions.
This is an exceptional example of a Windsor continuous armchair, having both great form and proportions. the crest rail terminates into shaped arms supporting swollen spindles above a shaped saddle seat. The finely executed bulbous turned legs are joined by turned stretchers.
