Lakeside Landscape in Mountain Views, unsigned, ca. 1860-1870, oil on canvas, 28½” x 48¼”; 35″ x 54½” (framed). Great condition, very minor scattered in-painting. Provenance: Private collection, Pond Eddy, New York. Sonntag was best known for his romantic landscape views, often embellished with illuminating light or contrasting shadow effects. His work is quite distinctive and he often painted the same views making only little alterations, as seen here in this example.
