William Ongley “was a particularly faithful and excellent landscape painter and his productions usually found a ready sale,” according to his Utica Daily Observer, Utica, NY obituary. During his early years in New York City, he honed his artistic skills under the supervision of Thomas Worthington Whittredge. During his career, Ongley traveled extensively throughout the East coast selling his work.
Examples can be found in the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY and The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, NY.
“His paintings are usually mountain lake landscapes, waterfalls, glens, or deep woodland scenes. He has a great eye for nature and a real appreciation of light in the wilderness.”
