Afternoon Along the Coast
Signed (l.r.): W. Webber, dated 1875.

22”h x 31”w

Born in Maine in 1841, Wesley Webber became known even among his contemporaries such as J.J. Enneking, Frank Shapleigh and William Stubbs, whom he shared a studio with, as a well accomplished marine, landscape and historical painter. This view is most likely a view of coastal Massachusetts, perhaps even Cape Cod or the Islands. The afternoon sunshine, illuminating the waves and central shoreline exhibit Webber’s talent as a marine artist. His works are included in the top regional American museums. The Boston Athenaeum, The Peabody Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, The Metropolitan Museum and Portland Museum in Maine.
