Walter Lunt Palmer was best known for his snowy winter landscape views. The son of famed sculptor, Erastus Dow Palmer of Albany, New York. He was introduced to the art world at a young age. During his youth, he was immersed in a steady stream of artists visiting the Palmer family home and he spent time in the presence of Frederic Edwin Church, John Frederick Kensett, and Jervis McEntee. At the age of sixteen, Palmer developed an early interest in painting, which led him to pursue formal training under the instruction of Church.
Palmer’s masterful landscapes garnered critical recognition and popular acclaim. His impressionist manner earned him comparison to Claude Monet and John Henry Twatchman, and he received numerous awards and honors during his lifetime.
He received gold medals from the Philadelphia Art Club and the Boston Art Club and prizes for the American Watercolor Society and the Paris Exposition of 1900. HE also exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, the Corcoran Gallery Biennial, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work is now featured in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Butler Institute of American Art, among other important institutions.
