SOLD
American School
Unsigned, ca. 1835.
Watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper.
16 ½” x 15 ½” (with frame).
Over-all in fine condition, uniform toning and oxidation, small repaired tear to lower right edge.
The paperboard backing retains several labels, including The American Folk Art Gallery, New York City, New York, dated June 8, 1971, and the Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Texas. The American Folk Art Gallery label suggests that the work is from the Collection of Mrs. Charles Sheeler, likely the second wife of the American Modernist painter Charles Sheeler (1883-1965). The backing also retains a small handwritten label inscribed Ex Edith Halpert Coll., likely the American Modernist and Folk Art dealer Edith Gregor Halpert (1900-1970), who sold Charles Sheeler’s work at her New York City gallery, Downtown Gallery.
