This example is one of a series of three paintings depicting the Old South Church in Bath, Maine and its destruction by a mob of “Know Nothing” party members orchestrated by a street-preacher named John S. Orr. On the evening of July 6, 1854 the members entered the church, broke windows, rang the bell, hoisted the American flag, and set the building on fire. This example shows the church on the town square prior to the destruction and fire.
