Spectators Observing a Ship on Fire

Spectators Observing a Ship on Fire

Artist unidentified, American, ca. 1850-1865.
Oil on canvas, in a period lemon-gilt ripple frame.
20 ½” x 28”, 26 ½” x 34” with frame.
Over-all in excellent condition.
Painted in a primitive style by an itinerant artist, the scene depicts a historical local event of what appears to be a barge on fire viewed by onlookers. The wonderful use of contrasting light creates a more dramatic feel to the painting.
