Signed on verso and (l.l), S.F.M. Badger ‘96.
Oil on canvas, custom 19th c. style carved, gilt frame.
22” x 36”, 30” x 43 ½” with frame.
Excellent condition, unlined on original stretcher.
The three masted ship, owned by and named, E.I. White, was constructed in Harrington, Maine. Solon Badger, son of a marine painter, was primarily self-taught and spent his time as a young boy painting in Boston harbor. Influenced by ship portrait painter, William P. Stubbs, whom he also studied with, Badger gained notoriety as an accomplished marine artist by the late 19th c.
