Sidney Richard Percy was one of six sons of the English landscape painter, Edward William. He and his brothers all learned to paint and by age 20, Sidney was an accomplished artist. Shortly thereafter he changed his last name to Percy. Percy began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Academy.
The mountainous landscape of Wales, like that pictured in A Highland Lake, was Percy’s favorite subject. Percy captured the grandeur of the countryside better than any of his contemporaries, and he was one of the most celebrated artists of Victorian England. Percy exhibited more than three hundred paintings during his life and his paintings are found in many public collections in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States.
