Sheraton Bow-Front Chest

SOLD

Probably coastal New Hampshire, ca. 1830.
Birch, flame birch veneer, mahogany veneer and banding.
Condition: Over-all in great condition with original repoussé cast brass. Minor imperfections to mahogany veneer on skirt.
Provenance: Samuel T. Holmgnew, Whitington Auction, July 1976; Private collection, Loudon, New Hampshire, 1935-1974; attributed to cabinetmaker Joshua Emery (1788-1870) active 1813-1835, Louden, New Hampshire.
This is a quintessential example of a high country coastal New Hampshire case piece. Having a shaped top with carved turret corners flanking a bow-front with four drawers faced with highly figured flame-birch veneer, book-matched panels. The case is supported by finely turned delicate legs with a shaped mahogany veneered skirt. The chest exhibits great form and with the additional carved elements on the applied drawer lips and tops of the corners, coupled with tall stance, it transcends into a masterpiece of high country furniture.
