Sala Bosworth was an itinerant portrait artist whose paintings, distinguished by their exclusive use of red, black and white paint, recorded residents of towns along the Ohio River, including important leaders at the time. He also painted landscapes in both oil and watercolor. Born in Halifax, Massachusetts, he and his parents moved to Marietta, Ohio in 1818. Bosworth studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, returning to Marietta to work as an artist.
