Rare Chinese Export Reverse Painting on Glass

SOLD

Chinese, ca. 1820-1830. Excellent condition with the original black painted and back-board. 16 ½” h. x 12 ½” with frame.
The image appears to be of a West Indies native woman waving farewell to an American ship. The woman is wearing a white skirt, bare-breasted with a miniature portrait hanging from a red bandana around her neck and holding a comb. One would assume she had traded for these items, fairly common practice for the East-India trade companies during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
