Portrait of George Washington
American School
Unsigned, ca. 1840-1850. Stamped on verso, “J.J. Adams, Washington St., Boston”.
Oil on canvas.
27” x 22”, 34 ½” x 31” with frame.
Found in untouched condition, one small patch on verso, recently cleaned. Appears to be in original frame.
This stylized portrait of a young George Washington with flowing hair and confident disposition was most likely derived from an Atheneum portrait seen by the artist. The most likely attribution could be William Matthew Prior who worked in the Boston area during this time.
