Condition:  Excellent condition, unlined on original white pine stretcher.  Virturally no inpainting under ultra-violet light.  In a period gilt frame.
Provenance:  Peter Tillou, 1975.  Private Collection, Connecticut.
The sitter appears to be a wealthy merchant or sea captain.  The artist has captured this by incorporating a view or glimpse of his estate in the distance.  The manner in which he is painted, the posturing, clothing, formal chair, also suggest his status in society.
