Pieter Casteels III was best known for his birds and animal paintings but also produced significant fruit and flower still life paintings. He came to London in 1708 and was Director of Kneller’s Great Queen Street Academy by 1711. After Casteels became a master in 1713 he returned from Antwerp to then primarily paint in London, at Tooting and then at Richard. This rare pair of paintings once belonged in the collection of 18th century sporting paintings, some of which were commissioned by the fourth Earl of Craven, who died in 1764.
