Pair of Recumbent Lions

American, second half of 19th c. Stoneware ceramic with glazed finish.
Over-all in fine condition, repair to back corner of one base, minor imperfections with age-appropriate wear and oxidation.
Provenance: Private Collection, western New York; Stair Auctions, Hudson, New York.
American sewer tile glazed figures of recumbent lions are scarce to find. Intended for outdoor use, this pair has survived in a remarkable state of preservation. The expressions of the lions’ faces are reminiscent of depictions seen in Edward Hicks’ Peaceable Kingdom paintings.
