American School, artist unidentified, ca. 1807.
Inscribed on verso(s): George Booth 1767-1832 and Maria Vassar Booth 1787-1864 painted about 1812.
Oil on wood panels.
17 x 12 ¾” (panel), 19 ¾” x 15 ¾” with frame.
Both in over-all great condition, minor varnish blooming restored. Found in untouched condition. Original gilt frame liners.
Provenance: Originally purchased from a descendent; The Kindig Collection, York, Pennsylvania.
George and Maria Vassar Booth resided in Poughkeepsie, New York. They were married on April 28, 1806 which we believe is around the time the portraits were painted. Maria was the daughter of George Vassar who endowed Vassar College, the first women’s college in American.
