Orville Bulman was a self-taught artist who is known for his fanciful and dramatic genre paintings. He was inspired from a trip to Haiti in the early 1950’s for its rustic hills, Haitian people, their village, lifestyle, and religion. Bulman was encouraged to create whimsical scenes as seen here in this painting of native women with shields scaring off lions in the jungle. This series of “jungle paintings” painted in the 1960’s and 70’s was also inspired by the works of Henri Rousseau.
