Maude Jewett studied at the Art Students League in New York City and by 1922 she became recognized as one of the leading woman sculptors of her time. As described by Jules and Nancy Heller in North American Women Artist of the 20th Century, “Her eleven-inch tall Flower Holder: Two Dancers, sculpted in 1924 has been described as having Art Deco characteristics in the slickness of surface, smoothness of idealized forms, and somewhat exaggerated, stylized poses of standing, tip-toe male and female nudes holding each other’s wrists, leaning away from each other as far as possible to create space between them for flowers or other vertical items.”
