Born in Lewis County, New York where he was raised on a farm, Prentice began his career as a self-taught artist, painting landscapes, although he became known for his still-life images of fruit growing on trees or spilling out of baskets. Prentice placed emphasis on dark outlining with a concern for textual precision, creating dramatic contrasts.
