Leon du Paty painted battle scenes and some historical paintings like The Landing. The quality of his work is superb and obviously he was academy-trained. Du Paty was a friend of fellow artist Edouard Manet. Manet painted a portrait of du Paty’s wife in 1879, the same year that du Paty painted this panel.
