Joseph Henry Hatfield was born near Kingston, Ontario in 1863 but settled in Massachusetts. He trained in Paris at the Academie Julien and then returned to Massachusetts. He exhibited widely including at Boston Art Club from 1888-1902 as well as at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Hatfield participated at the Paris Salon in 1891, the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1892-1893 and at the St. Louis World’s Fair, also known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in 1904.
An accomplished artist, Hatfield painted impressionist landscapes as well as portraits of children. The palette and brushwork of Young Woman Fishing along a River recalls the work of other Boston artists like John Leslie Breck, Frank W. Benson and Dennis Miller Bunker.
