A still-life painter in the Flemish tradition, Robie was known as
painter of the rose throughout his career. His paintings like Still Life
of Flowers and a Pewter Guild Cup exhibit a stunning virtuosity and
great attention to every detail. A true academician, Robie studied at the Brussels Academy from 1838 to 1840 and often exhibited at the Brussels
Salon in the years 1843-1875. Between 1848 and 1875, Robie worked in
London and was a frequent exhibitor at Royal Academy there. The still-life
artist even exhibited in France, including at the Paris Salon in 1863 and
at the Exposition Universelle of 1885. In addition to painting, Robie also
had a successful career as a writer. He wrote travelogues as well working
as an art correspondent and authoring books about art.
