Henry Herman Cross became a reputed painter of Indian portraits. Born in Flemingville, NY Cross traveled to Paris where he studied with animal painter Rosa Bonheur between 1853-1855. After returning to America, Cross headed West where he carried out his career as a painter. This example of “GladStone”, certainly shows Cross as an accomplished painter with a fondness to paint his subjects in fanciful ways.
