Harry Roseland was one of America’s first notable genre painters who continued to paint subjects that told a story throughout his career. His early subjects were sentimental and depicted fashionable people, rural folk and idealized farm scenes. Roseland studied with Thomas Eakins and J.B. Whittaker (in Brooklyn), which is evident in his style and technique of painting, as seen here.
Around 1880 Roseland began to specialize in African American themes, often painted in series, which brought him financial and critical success. His paintings were exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Club and the National Academy of Design and were often reproduced in popular periodicals.
