Harrison Bird Brown (1831-1915)

Lived/active: primarily Maine and New England. Coastal View of Maine Cliffs. Signed (l.r.) HB Brown, ca. 1860-1870. Oil on canvas. Excellent condition, virtually no restoration, original frame. Born in Portland, Maine, Brown spent over thirty years painting. Along the coast line and by the mid-19th c. was praised as a leading American marine painter. His romantic depictions of Maine’s rugged coast line of white caps crashing against cliffs with mist and sea spray can be seen here in this example. Harrison Bird Brown exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York from 1858-1860 and the Boston Athenaeum and Philadelphia Exposition in 1876. He became the best known native Maine painter of his time by the late 19th century.
