Francis A. Silva was best known for his coastal views and marine paintings, becoming one of the leading members of the luminist style in the mid-to-late 19th century. Evolving from a self-taught artist, he had a remarkably skillful technique, most notably with atmospheric effects that varied little throughout his career. This wonderful view of The Beach Near Port Judith, Rhode Island certainly captures his talent, which received much acclaim among his contemporaries and patrons of the period. Today he is well represented in major museums and private collections.
