American, ca. 1850. Black walnut. Excellent condition, original surface with wonderful patina. A fabulous whimsical piece of vernacular art depicting a man squatting over a hole (inkwell) while smoking his pipe (bone). This finely carved, stylized figure captures the mood and spirit of the sitter.
