Federal Mirror with Eglosmise Tablet, Massachusetts, probably Boston Area.     Ca. 1810-1820. Giltwood and gesso, eastern white pine.  The tablet draws the viewer into a serene scene of two figures fishing. The quality of the reverse painting is the mirror’s strongest attribute, along with its excellent overall condition. Virtually no restoration to gilt surface, minor in-painting to border.
