Eagle Wall Sconce

Rare and Possibly Unique Carved Eagle Wall Sconce.
Probably English, ca. 1790-1815.
Carved pine and gesso with gilt surface. Fine condition, minor restorations to some of the foliage carving and areas of the gilt surface. Finely carved and executed, this wall sconce is made in three sections. The top portion has a carved eagle surmounted on a sphere with carved acanthus scrolls. The center section has gadrooning on the top and bottom portions of the column. The lower section has finely carved acanthus foliage behind four candelabras with wire-work scrolls. The sections were dowelled together and are now re-supported with wood blocks.
Private Collection Chicago; purchased from auction in the late 1970’s: originally from a prominent Long Island, New York family.
