David Birdsey Walkley is known primarily as a New England landscape and marine painter – and indeed, he lived much of his life in Connecticut – but he also traveled frequently both within the United States and to Europe. His travels are reflected in his oeuvre, as his subjects range far outside New England scenes to landscapes such as this southwestern scene. His style also reflects his life straddling the 19th and 20th centuries, from his extraordinary realist genre pieces to more loosely painted, spontaneous scenes in an Impressionist palette. His wide range included figure, portrait, landscape, marine and rural genre painting.
This landscape was most likely painted by Walkley during one of his visits to Phoenix, Arizona. “Desert View” reflects Walkley’s vast range of subject matters he painted. He is also know for his Impressionistic style and colorful palette.
