Classical Cellarette 


Philadelphia, ca. 1830-1840.
Mahogany, figured crotch-mahogany veneer, poplar secondary wood, lead liner.
Over-all in great condition, including original liner, minor imperfections (see full condition report).
Provenance: From a prominent North Shore family, Massachusetts; Eldred’s Auctions, East Dennis, Massachusetts.
This is one of the most elegant and elaborately carved, American cellarettes we have seen. The rare bombe form is complimented with highly figured and matched mahogany veneers and embellished with gadrooned carving around the lid and carved Grecian and foliate motifs on the corners and base while supported by ogee bracket feet. The top of the slightly peaked, mansard-hinged lid has a finely carved and executed cluster of grapes for a handle.
