Charles T. Phelan was a landscape painter and pupil of Frederick Rondel (1826-1892) who was best remembered as the teacher of Winslow Homer. His almost impressionistic style mixed with the luminist approach captured the spontaneity of the moment, like the dark cloud moving toward the woodland landscape, as seen here with the fisherman outside his cottage along the river. He seems to have been at the cutting edge of what would be called the modern movement.
