Charles Gruppe traveled to Europe at a young age to learn and study art. While in Holland, he became influenced by the Dutch artists and became very skillful at subtle coloration and careful draftsmanship, as seen here, On Squirrel Island. In America Gruppe was both an artist and dealer of Dutch painting and influenced his son Emile, who became a highly regarded artist.
