Carved Spread-Wing Gilt Eagle

American, probably Pennsylvania or Massachusetts, late 18th.c / early 19th. c.
Carved hard pine, gesso with sizing and gilt. Fine condition, old repair to one wing and portions to one talon, minor areas of restoration to the original gilt.
This exceptionally well executed carved eagle has several attributes found on known American examples. The flattened stylized head with pronounced eyes and beak, boldly carved talon feet and the deeply undercut feathers on the spread wings are features seen on both Philadelphia and Boston area carvers.
