Carved Giltwood Eagle

American, possibly Pennsylvania, ca. 1800-1820
Pine, gesso and gilt
Over-all in fine condition, original gilt, exhibiting wear commensurate to age.
This spread-wing eagle perched on a rocky eyrie has survived in a remarkable state of preservation. These architectural carved eagles were fashionably used over doorways and arches during the Federal period.
