Carved Eagle with American Flag

Rare Carved Eagle with Flag, Shield and Arrows

American, probably Pennsylvania, ca. 1850-1875
Carved wood, polychrome paint.
Full condition report available upon request.
This Carved Eagle with American Flag portrays similarities to the work of George Stapf (1862-1958), who often carved eagles with a waving American Flag and shield, however, we believe this is an earlier example, masterfully carved by an unknown maker. This example shows the eagle clutching a shield with 13 stars and a bundle of arrows with an olive branch. Theses recognizable symbolic elements along with the eagle, carved with outstretched wings, is emblematic of the Coat of Arms on the Great Seal of the United States. Proudly displayed behind the eagle is a large 23-star American Flag with nine stripes. The 23-star flag was in use from July 4th 1820 to July 3, 1822 under the presidency of James Monroe.
