Provenance: Private Collection, Newport, Rhode Island; Descended through a prominent Massachusetts family.
This rare large-size carved eagle perched on a sphere was probably intended for outdoor use as an ornament adorning the top of a building or lodge. The eagle, with its full body, swept back wings and pronounced talons exhibits great presence. These stylistic features are recognizable as common to Northshore Massachusetts carvers. See historical reference images.
