Although William Henry Barown is best known for his silhouette portraits of prominent people, he occasionally created subjects of ships, carriages, and buildings. He travelled the country extensively for his commissions. At one point he had a studio on Pine Street in Philadelphia. Today he is known as one of the original masters of paper cutting alongside the French-born Auguste Amant Constant Fidèle Edouart (1789–1861).
