This portrait was most likely painted during Phillips’ “Kent Period”, ca. 1836-1838. His portraits painted during this period feature darker backgrounds in contrast with brilliant patches of bright color, as seen in the painted chair. His subjects were often painted with elegant graceful poses and facial expressions. This work seems to embody all these characteristics and likenesses.
