Whitehouse was a wounded war Veteran who lost his right arm in the Battle of Bull Run in 1861. After losing the ability to draw with his right hand, he learned to draw and paint with his left hand. By 1865, Whitehouse was competing in left-handed penmanship contests and created some great work. He later became an accomplished artist but his works are relatively unknown.
