John Inman was an accomplished artist in his time, earning a reputation for portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. He was the son of Artist Henry Inman (1801-1846), and was one of the founders and first Vice President of the National Academy of Design in New York City. He received his art training from his father, who died at an early age. He kept a studio in New York City and traveled widely for commissions. Later in life, he traveled to Italy and England, returning to live in Saugerties, New York. He died nearly destitute, having to create paintings in order to afford food.
