Over-all in fine condition, lined with minor craquelure and small areas of inpainting revealed under ultra violet light. Housed in a period—most likely original—carved and gilt wood frame.

Winckworth Allan Gay was a painter of landscapes and one of the first Americans to be influenced by the Barbizon style of painting from France. He was also one of the first American painters to live and paint in Japan.
Gay’s paintings can be found in the collections of the Boston Athenaeum, Brooklyn Museum, Hingham Historical Society, Massachusetts, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
