Paint-Decorated Tall Case Clock
New England, probably Shaftsbury, Vermont
Pine, polychrome paint decorated
Full condition report available upon request.
This exuberantly painted clock is one of the more accomplished and thoughtful examples we have seen. The geometric symmetry of the panels on the case, front, and sides is enhanced by faux decorated wood graining and multi-color paint decoration. This cottage industry of painted clock cases can be found in rural areas where they had less access to finer woods, such as crotch mahogany. This is an area of American furniture that intersects folk art.
