Chippendale Open Armchair
Pennsylvania, probably Philadelphia area, ca. 1760-1770. Walnut.
Over-all in fine condition, restoration to the joinery of the corner blocks of seat frame, retaining an old, dry varnish finish.
Exhibiting great form and design, this unusual Chippendale chair has a shaped crest rail with a finely carved shell and rosettes above a carved vasiform splat flanked by scrolled, shaped arms with carved knuckles. The trapezoid seat frame is supported by cabriole front legs with matching shell and rosette carving on the knees.
