Samuel Carr arrived in America around 1862 from England. He initially enrolled in a mechanical drawing class in 1865 at the Cooper Union in New York City. By 1870 he began exhibiting genre paintings and developed a fine reputation among his contemporaries, colleagues, and patrons. During his career he exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Academy of Design.
