Ernest Parton and his older brother Arthur Parton were successful artists. Born men grew up in Hudson, New York where they painted in the shadow of earlier Hudson River School artists Sanford Gifford and Frederic Church. Young Ernest learned a great deal from his older brother Arthur when he accompanied him on sketching trips. By 1865, Ernest began sharing a studio with Arthur on Broadway in New York City.

In 1873, Ernest left to paint in England and France. While in England he was intimate with many of the prominent American expatriate artists like Sargent and Whistler and even exhibited his Barbizon style paintings at the Royal Academy a number of times. In the 1880’s and 1890’s Parton exhibited at various American exhibitions including the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893.
