Turned Barber Pole Trade Sign
American, ca. 1850-1865.
White pine with red, white and blue paint
Condition: Wonderful, with the painted surface evenly worn from weathering, and minor areas of paint loss.
Although the original painted surface is initially the sign’s strongest feature, its rare large size and well-defined turnings are the sculptural elements that make this example so aesthetically pleasing.
