Typical with many of Thomas Chamber’s works, this painting was derived from an engraving by Cornelius Tiebout after compositions done by Thomas Birch and Michel Felice Corne in 1813. The U.S. Frigate Constitution commanded by Isaac capturing the Britannic Majesty’s Frigate Guerriere was one of themost famous battle scenes during the War of 1812. This example by Chambers is amoung only versions known by the artist.

The painting is very characteristic of Chamber’s style of painting with the bold use of colors and brush strokes evoking a real sense of drama in the subject of seamanship, courage, death and destruction. For enthusiasts, scholars and collectors of Thomas Chambers, this battle scene embodies all the attributes we like to see in his work.
